Celebrating International Mother Language Day

Posted: 20th March 2026

Once again, we enjoyed a fabulous day in school celebrating our rich cultural diversity for International Languages Day or ‘Mother Tongue Day’.

The day has been celebrated internationally since 2000 and is an important day to raise awareness of the range of languages spoken at home and not necessarily at school.

The day began with a Global Drumming workshop, led by Sarah Westwood from Primal Sound. Children explored African and Asian drumming influences, beating in rhythm.

A craft session followed where children created international flags using mixed media. These are now on display in the Dining Room.

In the afternoon, we were thrilled to welcome Priya Sundar to school to lead an Indian dance workshop. Priya is an experienced South Asian dance instructor, who has taught around the world. Children learned different steps, used scarves and rhythm sticks, working in pairs and as a group.

Jen and Sarah prepared a magnificent Chinese New Year feast for us all at lunchtime, where we enjoyed sweet and sour chicken, spring rolls and rice!

Forms 1 and 2 were also fortunate to be joined by Magnus’ Mum who gave the children a lesson in Mandarin.

To finish off a wonderful day, Mr and Mrs Pattni generously brought in traditional Indian formal wear and jewellery, including a wedding dress. Children (and Mrs Carroll!) had the opportunity to carefully try on the items.
