Funded Education

Universal Entitlements:

All children aged 3 and 4 years are entitled to 570 Universal Hours of Early Education Funding (EEF) per year. From January 2025, at Edenhurst this will be stretched across 50 weeks per year so you will see this applied on your invoice as 11.4 hours a week.

Working Parents Entitlements:

Some parents of children aged between 9 months and 2 years are also entitled to up to 570 Working Parent Hours of Early Education Funding (EEF) per year. From January 2025, at Edenhurst this will also be stretched across 50 weeks so you will see this applied to your invoice as 11.4 hours a week. To receive the full 11.4 hours, children must attend 3 days a week. Please visit Childcare Choices at www.childcarechoices.gov.uk to see if you are eligible for this.

Extended Entitlements  (30 Hours Childcare):

Some 3 year old children will also be eligible for another 570 hours if both parents meet the criteria required. To qualify for the scheme, parents must be working and each earning at least £120 a week (on average) and not more than £100,000 each a year. Please apply via the Childcare Choices website to confirm your eligibility.

At Edenhurst, from January 2025, this will only be offered to children who have older siblings in school, children who have registered for Reception or children who attend on a full time basis (5 days a week). This will also be stretched across 50 weeks and will be reflected on your invoice as 22.8 hours a week. To receive the full 22.8 hours, children must attend 3 days a week. Please see our Funding FAQs below for further information.

Children who do not meet the above criteria will still receive the current Universal Entitlement.

Tax Free Childcare

Parents in England can use the Tax-Free Childcare scheme alongside the 15- and 30-hour funded childcare options. This scheme allows parents to deposit money into an online account, with the government adding £2 for every £8 contributed. The arrangement is available to employed and self-employed parents, although eligibility is subject to certain income and employment conditions. Payments into the scheme are made from post-tax income and after employee National Insurance contributions. To check if you’re eligible and find out more, visit: www.childcarechoices.gov.uk

Childcare Vouchers

Edenhurst accepts childcare vouchers from providers including Edenred, Computershare, Sodexo, Imagine, Fideliti, and Care4. If you wish to use vouchers from another provider, please contact the Office, and we will do our best to accommodate your request.

Nursery Funding FAQs

1. What is Early Education Funding (EEF)?

EEF is a government-funded scheme designed to subsidise early education and childcare costs for families with children aged 3-4 years (and some children between 9 months and 2-year-olds, depending on circumstances). Funding starts from the term after a child’s birthday.

Key Points About EEF:

Universal Entitlement:

  • All 3 – and 4-year-olds are entitled to 570 funded hours per year, equivalent to 15 hours per week for 38 weeks (term time).

Extended Entitlement (30 Hours Funding):

  • Some families may be eligible for an additional 570 hours (a total of 1140 hours per year), equivalent to 30 hours per week for 38 weeks. Eligibility is subject to meeting specific criteria.

You can apply and check your eligibility via www.childcarechoices.gov.uk. Please note that families must provide an eligibility code directly to the Nursery, as we cannot apply on your behalf.

2. When can my child access funding?

  • A child who turns 9 months, 2 years or 3 years old between 1st January – 31st March is eligible from 1st April.
  • A child who turns 9 months, 2 years or 3 years old between 1st April and 31st August  is eligible from 1st September.
  • A child who turns 9 months, 2 years or 3 years old between 1st September and 31st December is eligible from 1st January.

This Early Years Alliance parent and carers guide explains more about the government programmes, eligibility criteria, and how families can access these services here.

3. Is funded childcare the same as free childcare?

No, funded childcare is not completely free. While it is sometimes referred to as “free childcare”, it is important to understand that the government funding scheme provides subsidised childcare for 38 weeks of the year (term time).

Families requiring childcare beyond this period would need to pay for the remaining 14 weeks to cover the full 52 weeks of the year.

4. Why do nurseries charge fees for additional hours when the government provides funding?

EEF funding contributes to basic childcare costs but does not cover the full cost of delivering high-quality education and care. Additional fees help ensure we can employ specialist teaching staff, provide excellent facilities and resources, and deliver the exceptional standards you expect from Edenhurst.

5. How is EEF funding going to be applied at Edenhurst from January 2025?

From January 2025, the 570 hours of funding (or 1140 hours for extended entitlement) will be “stretched” across 50 weeks of the year to align with our year-round care model.

  • For the universal entitlement, this equates to 11.4 funded hours per week.
  • For extended entitlement, this equates to a maximum of 22.8 funded hours per week, subject to eligibility and meeting our entitlement criteria (see below).

This approach provides a consistent subsidy each week, rather than concentrating funded hours in term time.

6. Do we have to meet all three criteria to qualify for the extended entitlement?

No, to qualify for the additional 570 hours of funding at Edenhurst, families need to meet a minimum of one of the three specific criteria as outlined in our EEF Entitlement Policy:

  • Have older siblings already attending Edenhurst Preparatory School.
  • Completed and returned the School Registration Form and paid the Deposit.
  • Attend the nursery on a full-time basis.

Children who do not meet the above criteria will still receive the current Universal Free Entitlement.

7. When can I access funded hours at Edenhurst?

Families can only access funded hours during specific set times to align with our specialist teaching provision and daily schedule. These sessions are:

Universal Entitlement (3-4 year olds) / Extended Entitlements (9 month-2 year old)

Day 1: 8:00am – 12:00pm

Day 2 : 8:00am – 12:00pm

Day 3 : 8:00am – 11:24am

Extended Entitlement (3-4 year olds)

Day 1 8.00am – 4.00pm

Day 2 8.00am – 4.00pm

Day 3 8.00am – 2.48pm

This structure ensures that children can benefit from specialist teaching and activities during their funded hours. Sessions outside of these times will be chargeable. Our team can provide a breakdown of costs based on your chosen schedule.

9. Does Edenhurst have to offer Early Education Funding (EEF)?

No, Edenhurst Nursery is not required to provide EEF funding. As an independent school, we voluntarily participate in the scheme to support families.

Some independent schools and nurseries choose not to offer EEF at all because government funding does not cover the full cost of delivering high-quality education and care. Our decision to offer EEF reflects our commitment to families while balancing the sustainability of our high standards and facilities.

11. Can I access EEF hours if my child misses sessions due to illness or holidays?

Unfortunately, missed EEF hours cannot be rescheduled or carried over.

12. How can I plan for childcare costs?

We recommend reviewing your family’s childcare needs for the entire year and considering how EEF funding is applied. Our team is happy to help you understand your entitlements and provide a breakdown of costs based on your child’s schedule.

If you have further questions about our fees or how funding is applied, please get in touch.
