Class Teacher: Liz Hodgkinson

Children usually join our Reception class in the September after their fourth birthday. In Reception we follow a structured programme, allowing the children to move onto National Curriculum work when they are ready. Regular reading and spelling homework offers parents an ideal opportunity to be involved in their child’s education.

Class sizes are small, averaging around 16 children, which allows for a very advantageous pupil to adult ratio. This ensures that your child’s talents and interests are recognised, nurtured and encouraged.

Children in Reception study a range of subjects including French, Music, P.E. and Swimming with expert members of the school staff. Our main priority is to make the first School year both enjoyable and productive. There are still lots of opportunities for play, and the classes make regular trips outside school to museums or other centres of interest. Visitors to the classroom provide extra depth to topics studied through the year, and children enjoy frequent outdoor learning with our Eco School activities and ‘Forest Fridays’.

The curriculum is balanced through diverse extra-curricular activities, including Ballet, Golf and Judo.

During the school holidays children in Reception can attend our popular Edventures Holiday Club and high quality wraparound care is available if needed from 7:30am – 6:00pm.

Our Day in Reception video, Pupil Work link and Reception News on the left of this page provides a valuable insight into life in our Reception class.
