At Edenhurst, we are always looking for ways to help our pupils understand how small actions can make a big difference to our world. We were thrilled to welcome Alison, Sarah and a very special guest, Kevin the Carrot, from Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council to talk to us about recycling food waste and what happens to it once it leaves our school in the big truck.
The children were fascinated to learn that our food waste doesn’t just disappear, it goes on an exciting journey to a special local facility where it is either broken down by an anaerobic digester (a bit like a huge tummy) to make biogas that helps power homes in Staffordshire, or it is turned into bio-fertiliser to help grow plants and produce more food.
We were especially delighted to be the first school in the borough to receive the brand-new information and activity booklets all about food waste recycling. These are packed with fun facts, activities, and ideas for how we can all be “Food Waste Heroes” both in school and at home.
A huge thank you to Alison, Sarah, and Kevin for inspiring us to think more carefully about what we throw away and how we can all play our part in looking after our planet.
