Exploring Classics: Prep 3’s Exciting Adventure in Shrewsbury

Posted: 15th December 2023

On Tuesday 21st November, Prep 3 went on a Classics trip to Shrewsbury. Prep 3 are learning Latin for the first time this year and the aim of the visit was to introduce the children to Classical myths and legends and to investigate real Roman artefacts.

The first part of our trip was to watch a mythological animated film called Epic Tails as part of the Into Film Festival 2023 – a free, annual, UK-wide celebration of film & education for 5-19 year olds. The film told the story of a little mouse Patti who goes on an adventure with Jason and the Argonauts to restore the trident of Poseidon, it really was an epic tale!

Following the film, we headed into the centre of the historic town of Shrewsbury to visit the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery. There we travelled from Roman times through to modern day investigating the vast range of treasures and activities they had to offer. Highlights included a Roman comb, mediaeval headdresses and antlers that belonged to a 7ft tall elk!

To conclude our trip, we took a walk along the River Severn to Quarry Park for a short playground visit. How many Prep 3’s can you squeeze into a roundabout!

Here are some summaries direct from our intrepid Roman explorers:
