The new term brought with it a change from the winter sports to the summer sports. We play fixtures in rounders, cricket, athletics, tennis and swimming and it is always lovely to play these sports. We also have our own Sports Day to look forward to in June.
The weather, obviously, is very important for these fixtures and as I write this, we have enjoyed weeks of beautiful sunny, warm weather allowing all our fixtures to go ahead. It is important for the children to be fully protected during this hot weather, so sun cream and a hat are essential and should be kept at school all term please.
U11 Rounders v Yarlet
This was our first competitive match of the term and we played it on our ‘home ground’ at Whitmore cricket club. It is always difficult to strike the ball, those rounders sticks are very thin! At first we were a little ‘rusty’ with both batting and fielding, but I am pleased to say that this improved in the second innings, with many rounders being scored and fielders picking up the ball quicker and throwing in more decisively.
Although we didn’t win the match, it was an enjoyable afternoon and the girls gained some valuable match experience.
Swimming Gala
A mixed team of Prep. 5 and 6 pupils took part in the Newcastle Small Schools’ Swimming Gala, which was held at Newcastle-under-Lyme School.
There were both individual and team events and a total of eight schools took part. We had some excellent swims in all strokes and also enjoyed the fun surfboard relay! All swimmers thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and for some, their first competitive gala.
We were placed 3rd overall, with points being very close. Congratulations to Dhiren who was awarded a gold medal in the individual freestyle race.
U9 Rounders v Yarlet
On a beautiful sunny afternoon, all of the Prep. 3 and 4 girls travelled to Yarlet School for their first rounders match. As all the girls were beginners, it was played as a coaching match, with rules being learned as they played.
The girls did a great job and worked very hard when batting and fielding. Bowling can be very difficult at first, but our bowlers soon improved and were able to pitch the ball accurately. It was a lovely afternoon enjoyed by all.
