Here at Edenhurst Nursery, a love of reading is fostered from a young age. Simple board books and ‘feely books’ are favourites in the Baby and Toddler Rooms for the children to learn how to turn the pages and look at colourful pictures.

The Babies thoroughly enjoy exploring the book basket and eagerly take out the books and repack them. They point to the pictures of interest such as dogs or birds. Some children particularly enjoy the interactive books where they can press the buttons and dance to the music at the same time. The Babies thoroughly enjoy being read to and cuddled during one to one story time.

A story can also link to lots of different areas of learning through carefully planned activities. As the Toddlers have been reading The Tiger Who Came To Tea recently, each Toddler has or will take our Tiger home for tea at their own house. They have the opportunity to ‘read’ in the Tiger’s diary what he has eaten for tea when it is their turn. After listening to the story at Nursery some of the Toddlers extended their learning by pretending to feed their own Tigers in the role play area with lots of different food. This use of imagination will eventually lead to the children learning to make up their own stories when they are older. Who knows, maybe even creating the next reading phenomenon for children in years to come!
