Head’s Blog: Embracing Change Together

Posted: 20th May 2026

As we move closer to the end of this academic year, and to the closing chapter of our remarkable school, I find myself returning to some words I shared in July 2023, when I first wrote about change.

At the time, I reflected on how change is an inevitable part of life in education, something we guide our children through with care, reassurance and optimism. What I did not fully appreciate back then was just how profoundly we, as a whole school community, would come to experience such a big change ourselves.

Edenhurst Preparatory School, founded in 1961 and rooted in the vision of the Copestick family, has been a constant presence here in the Westlands for generations. It has shaped young lives, built lasting friendships and stood as a place of warmth and belonging. To see this chapter drawing to a close is undeniably sad. And yet, it is also a moment to pause and recognise all that it has been, and all that has been achieved.

What has struck me most in recent weeks is not simply the scale of change we are facing, but the way in which our community has responded to it. Every day, pupils arrive with smiles, ready to learn, play and make the most of their time here. Staff continue to give their all, planning, teaching, supporting and nurturing with the same care and commitment as ever. Parents stand alongside us, offering encouragement and trust. In the midst of uncertainty, there is a quiet determination: we turn up, we carry on, and we do so together.

This, I believe, speaks volumes. It shows the resilience that sits at the heart of our school. It shows the resourcefulness of a community that adapts, supports and uplifts one another. And it shows that what truly defines a school is not its buildings, but its people. Change, as I wrote, can be unsettling, but it can also reveal strength, sometimes in ways we do not expect. And we are seeing that strength now in abundance.

So while we continue to navigate these final months together, let’s do so with a sense of pride. Pride in what Edenhurst has stood for for over 65 years. Pride in the role each of us has played in its story. Pride in how we are meeting this inevitable moment with dignity, kindness and resolve.

It is entirely natural that the weeks ahead will bring mixed emotions, but, alongside the sadness, there is also an enormous amount to celebrate, and, since returning after Easter, life at Edenhurst has been as busy and vibrant as ever. From the excitement of Prep 6’s visit to Peak Wildlife Park to the creativity sparked during our portrait workshop with contemporary artist Peter Davis, our pupils have fully embraced every single opportunity that has come their way. We were also delighted to welcome parents into school for Lunch Club, one of those simple but special occasions that perfectly captures the warmth and sense of community that lies at the heart of Edenhurst.

There has been a real buzz around school in recent weeks. Corridors have echoed with singing, laughter and the occasional dramatic rehearsal line being practised at full volume as preparations have gathered pace for the Kindergarten show, Form 1 performance and Prep Play. Alongside this, parent consultation meetings provided valuable opportunities to celebrate the excellent progress pupils continue to make across the school.

Sport has, as always, featured prominently in the calendar. From ISA athletics to our whole-school mini marathon, pupils demonstrated determination, resilience and tremendous team spirit. Activity Week brought plenty of adventure too, with some pupils challenging themselves through canoeing, raft building and abseiling at the Conway Centre. Meanwhile, those remaining in school enjoyed a wonderfully varied programme including visits to Trentham Gardens, tennis sessions, trips to the cinema and even a spot of bowling.

Our Prep pupils also travelled to London to visit the Houses of Parliament, bringing their studies vividly to life, while Camp Edenhurst proved to be another unforgettable highlight. Bushcraft skills, toasted marshmallows, sleeping under canvas and plenty of mud combined to create moments that I suspect will be talked about for years to come. Prep 6 rounded off their time together with a much-anticipated leavers’ trip to Alton Towers, a day of excitement, laughter and treasured times.

And, just when it seemed impossible to fit anything else into the term, we finished in true Edenhurst fashion with our Celebration Assembly and Café Concert, where pupils showcased their many talents in drama and music with confidence and pride.

How fortunate we are to have shared these moments together. These are the memories that endure: the friendships formed, the laughter shared, the opportunities embraced and the strong sense of belonging that has always made Edenhurst such a very special place.

I wish the Edenhurst community a safe and happy half-term break. I look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Monday 1st June when we will launch ourselves into the week with an exciting workshop from Circus Sensible – what a wonderful way to start our final half-term together.
