Above all, our main priority is to make the first years enjoyable and a productive start to school life
The majority of our pupils begin their school life in the Nursery, where they are able to join from three months before moving up to Reception usually in the September after their fourth birthday.
The Nursery is housed in a fully equipped separate building with its own garden and safe play area. Opportunities to meet the other infants and staff are available at lunch and play times, so that their eventual integration into the school is made easy.
There are thirteen qualified Nursery staff. Full time or part-time sessions are available to suit the needs of parents and children.
Nursery staff in charge of Babies and Toddlers follow the Birth To Three Matters guidance when planning work and activities for the children. In the pre-School class the children follow the Foundation Stage programme of study, involving them in Literacy, Numeracy, Creative Studies including art and music, a Physical Education scheme and Personal Development. Most of them will be reading by the time they leave Nursery and will be able to write, using the school’s own Handwriting scheme.
In Reception, the teacher is assisted by a qualified member of staff and the children are given a more structured programme, allowing opportunity to move onto National Curriculum work when they are ready. Reading and spelling form part of their first taste of Homework, giving parents an ideal opportunity to be involved in their child’s education with the Homework diaries becoming an ideal forum for communication between parent and school.
