Forms One and Two, Key Stage 1 (5 to 7 year olds)

Each class has its own Form Teacher and a qualified Classroom Assistant. The curriculum is extensive and covers the National Curriculum Programmes of Study. There is a strong emphasis on the teaching and learning of basic skills and the acquisition of competence in the traditional “three r's”.

Reading is encouraged through various schemes designed to meet the needs of the individual. The school's reading programme involves daily reading in the initial stages; parents are invited to share in the progress of their children by listening to them read at home and by reading to them. A love of reading and of books is one of the most valuable attributes we can foster in a young child.

Spelling lessons are linked with the handwriting scheme, which encourages a joint script, whilst Mathematics lessons include the learning of tables within a structured system. Both spellings and tables are re-inforced by Homework assignments and weekly tests.

As well as English, Mathematics and Science, subjects studied also include Geography, History, Religious Studies, Design Technology and Art. Information Technology plays an important part in the curriculum, as the children learn basic skills in computing using word processors, graphics and database applications.

The classes have weekly specialist teaching for Music and Physical Education sessions, including Swimming.
