History

History fires the curiosity of our pupils to develop an interest in the past. They consider how the past influences the present. As they do this, pupils develop a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people. They also develop skills of enquiry, investigation, analysis, evaluation and presentation.
History is taught throughout the School. From the introduction of the past through family and friends in Reception to basic vocabulary and terminology in Key Stage 1 through to causation in Key Stage 3.
The Schemes of Work for History is broadly in line with the National Curriculum, although in Key Stage 2 and 3 the study units selected have been chosen on the basis of providing pupils taking the Common Entrance Examination the historical knowledge and skills they require.
Throughout, the acquisition of historical knowledge and skills plays an important part of the teaching. Children are given the opportunity to use a variety of data, such as diaries, maps, and artefacts. There are also trips arranged to Museums and exhibitions where appropriate. The use of ICT is particularly encouraged to aid research and to enhance further learning.
