Geography teaches an understanding of places and environments. Through their work in geography, children learn about their local area and compare their life with that in other regions in the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world.
In the Reception class, geography is related to the Early Learning Goals which develop children's knowledge and understanding of the world. In Years 1 and 2 the schemes of work build upon and extend geographical knowledge and skills.
From Year 3 onwards, the National Curriculum Programmes of Study and the Common Entrance curriculum form the basis for the geography syllabus which is taught as a separate subject.
Throughout, the acquisition of geographical skills plays an important part of the teaching. Children are given the opportunity to use a variety of data, such as maps, aerial photographs, graphs, statistics and pictures and ICT is used appropriately to enhance learning.
