Admission and Administration
Admission into Edenhurst School is academically non-selective, but is subject to the prospective pupil meeting the criteria required to maintain the ethos of the school.
The Nursery Manager controls admission into Edenhurst Nursery In The Westlands for children aged three months to four years. The Headmaster, Bursar and Secretary administer admission into the Preparatory School.
Year of Entry into the School
The normal years of entry are Reception (R) and ACE 1 (Y 7).
Entry into Reception is in the September after the child’s fourth birthday. A child with a place in Nursery is guaranteed entry into Reception.
Entry into ACE (Y7) is in the September after the pupil’s eleventh birthday.
Entry into the school into other year groups is dependent on places being available. Entry is recommended at the beginning of a school term, but other times of entry are possible dependent on circumstances.
Class Sizes
The Adult:Pupil ratio is typically around 1:10 while teaching groups normally average 16 children. Classes may be larger for registration and social grouping and are limited, in normal circumstances, to not more than 24 children. Infant and Y3 classes are taught by a teacher with a classroom assistant. Thereafter, classes of 24 may be split into smaller teaching groups, dependent on the ability range of the class.
Assessment of Prospective Pupils
A place at the school may be offered after an interview between the Head and prospective parents.
Other than children entering Reception from Nursery, prospective pupils will be assessed according to academic ability and other strengths. A member of staff at school carries out assessment, appropriate for the age of the child, during a school day.
Application for a Place
Once the Head has offered a place, parents should complete the Application Form and forward the non-returnable Registration Fee of £75.
English as an additional language
Pupils for whom English is an additional language are admitted to the school where circumstances allow for provision to be made for their education in spoken and written English. An individual timetable may be made to accommodate individual or small group teaching in English.
(See separate Learning Support Policy)
Children with a Statement (of Special Needs)
Following a day’s assessment in school and a study of written records of progress from a previous school, pupils with a statement may be admitted if the Headmaster considers that attendance at the school can be of benefit to the child.
(See separate Special Needs Policy - SENDA)
Medical Details
Details of any pertinent medical conditions must be submitted to the School at the time of Application.
Waiting List
If a place in the appropriate year group is not available, the Head may still offer a place on the Waiting List. Parents would then be informed at the earliest opportunity when a vacancy occurs.
Withdrawal of Offer of a Place
The school reserves the right to withdraw the offer of a place subsequent to the receipt of an Application Form, in which case the Registration Fee would be refunded.
Discipline and Exclusion (see separate Behaviour Policy)
Race and Gender Discrimination (see separate Equal Opportunities Policy)
The school treats equally all pupils who apply for a place, regardless of race or gender.
Special Needs and Disability (see separate Special Needs Policy - SENDA)
The School has a duty to ensure that all prospective pupils are treated fairly and will make reasonable adjustments to ensure that such pupils are not placed at a substantial disadvantage.
