Competence in English is central to all learning. In today's world, perhaps more than ever, children need to be able to communicate effectively. At Edenhurst, the development of both spoken and written English is of prime importance, as too is the ability to listen with understanding and respond appropriately.
The English department delivers a thorough curriculum which enables children to acquire all the skills needed for effective communication. These are, namely; reading, comprehension, composition, spelling and handwriting, grammar skills and the study of literature.
The reading programme has been meticulously designed at all stages to ensure that children may develop their skills, whilst at the same time, become familiar with a wide range of literary genre. Independent readers are challenged with more demanding texts whilst the less able ones are given the support necessary for progress.
The English Department welcomes visiting poets, authors and performers to enrich the English Curriculum and encourage the development of literacy skills. Pictured are Scott Eck performing a Shakespearean workshop, in which pupils take on key roles, and Brian Moses, a renowned poet and author.
The primary aim is to create a love of reading and of the English language.
