Eco Update: The Allotment Develops!

In July 2015 we were offered a rather large plot at Lyme Valley allotments. We jumped at the chance and immediately took on the challenge (and what a challenge it has been!).

The first visit was enlightening. We were faced with 6 foot weeds and no visible ground. This was not enough to deter us and we soon return, armed with a petrol strimmer, lots of rubble bags and spades.  My family soon found that most of our free time was to be spent clearing, digging and landscaping to make the area usable and child friendly. We roped in wider family and friends when possible and the results of our hard work began to pay off.

In March, we received 105 free hedgerow saplings from the Woodland Trust and welcomed a few families from school to help with the planting. We also planted 2 apple trees and plum trees.

We constructed our plastic greenhouse ready to grow salad crops and we plan to plant potatoes, onions, peas, beans, rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants and pumpkins. We plan to donate all of the produce to the school kitchens for use in our school meals.

We have had financial support for the project from the school, Edenhurst Friends Association and Morrisons, as well as many more contributions in materials such as bark and pallet wood from school families.

After almost 8 months work we are happy to be taking the first 6 children to the allotment on Friday afternoon to plant our potatoes. We now hope to take 6 children each week from the Prep Forms on a rota basis throughout the year to grow, nurture and harvest a wide range of crops.
